Pregnancy, places substantial physical demands on a woman’s body. As the foetus grows and the body undergoes hormonal changes, women may experience an array of physical symptoms, such as back pain, pelvic pain, sciatica, and postural changes. These discomforts can affect a woman’s quality of life and may persist through various stages of pregnancy. It is here that osteopathy can play a significant role in addressing these issues.
Osteopathy and Pregnancy-Related Pain
-
Relieving Musculoskeletal Pain: Osteopathic techniques involve gentle, hands-on manipulations of the body to improve the alignment of the musculoskeletal system. This can help relieve pain and discomfort, especially in the back, hips, and pelvis, which are common areas of discomfort during pregnancy.
-
Enhancing Circulation: Improved blood circulation is essential for both the mother and the developing baby. Osteopathic techniques can promote better circulation and reduce swelling in the limbs, offering relief to pregnant women who may be experiencing oedema or varicose veins.
-
Reducing Stress and Anxiety: Pregnancy can be a time of emotional and mental stress, which may exacerbate physical discomfort. Osteopathic treatments can promote relaxation, reduce stress, and help pregnant women feel more comfortable in their changing bodies.
-
Preparing for Labour: Osteopathic treatments can help prepare the body for labour by ensuring that the pelvis is aligned and mobile. Proper alignment can facilitate an easier and more efficient labour process.
Pregnancy-related pain and discomfort is common, but it doesn’t need to be an inevitable part of the pregnancy journey. Osteopathy offers a non-invasive and natural approach to managing these issues by addressing musculoskeletal imbalances, improving circulation, and reducing stress. As a complementary therapy, osteopathy can significantly enhance the well-being of expectant mothers and contribute to a more positive and comfortable pregnancy experience..
All of our osteopaths are experienced in treating pregnancy-related pains. Lenka has been on a variety of courses including ‘Treatment & Exercise in the Childbearing Year’. Elise keeps up to date on the latest research on the pelvis and how a dysfunction can cause issues elsewhere in the body. She is therefore particularly interested in working with women during pregnancy. She regularly attends courses to further her knowledge especially in this area.
Treatment is not limited to the gestational period. Osteopathy can help post-partum with a combination of hands on treatment and rehabilitation exercises. If you or someone you know is ever in need of treatment please do not hesitate to contact us.
